We can use sophisticated devices such as MRI and PET scanners to look inside a live brain and see differences in brain structure (in the case of an MRI) or blood flow (in the case of a PET scanner) and see who is an alcoholic. We can also see that when somebody becomes sober that their brain will slowly revert itself back to it’s normal healthy state.

There’s another more fascinating thing that we’ve been able to see when using an EEG to measure brain waves. There’s a particular pattern called a P3 that not only tells us who might be an alcoholic but can even possibly predict who might become an alcoholic! It’s still in the research phase, but think about it. A way to sense that somebody might become a problem drinking even before they have started drinking too much.

Maybe it’s something that we could use on children or teens to detect if they might have a drinking problem later in life. Then we could encourage those people to learn more about drinking and alcohol (perhaps through a minor in possession class) which would help them to counteract those negative tendencies.
